Sikkens: the right color

Considering the spectacular growth of foundations that, like Sikkens Foundation, are operating on the national and international art and culture market, the current board feels that a new course should be embarked upon carefully. Without completely relinquishing the existing instruments of the Sikkens Prize and the Mondriaan Lecture, Sikkens Foundation is searching for new ways to raise the question of the meaning of the phenomenon of ‘colour’ - how colour is dealt with in art, science, the media, commerce and ultimately in everyday life - for a broad public. The organisation of the Colour Fair in the Beurs van Berlage (2005) signalled the beginning of a new and ambitious programme that Sikkens Foundation intends to carry out in the coming years. Visitors to the Colour Fair came into contact with artists, designers, architects, writers, scientists and high-level producers who are deliberately and in a special way involved with colour. All this took place in an overwhelming environment that included a programme of lectures, films, artists’ presentations and information stands. The fact that the 2004 Sikkens Prize was presented on this occasion to the HEMA also showed that Sikkens Foundation has no desire to repudiate its origins in postwar modernism.
