1999 MONDRIAN LECTURE IDENTITÄTEN IN DER INDUSTRIELANDSCHAFT — KARL GANSER — Professor Karl Ganser studied chemistry, biology, geo- graphy and geology at the University of Munich and the Institute of Technical Education there. After his studies he worked in the fields of urban planning and urban sociolo- gy. In 1964 Ganser received his doctorate in the natural sciences at the Technical University of Munich with re- gard to the social-spatial analysis of the city of Munich, calculated on the basis of the results of political elect- ions. In 1967 Ganser became responsible for the urban development of the city. For a few years he was a mem- ber of the management of the Federal Research Institute for Provincial Art and Town and Country Planning in Bonn, a scientifc institute with approximately 150 em- ployees, which organizes applied research for the federal minister for town and country planning, architecture and urban planning. From 1980, Ganser was appointed as the head of the department of urban planning of the fede- ral state of North Rhine-Westphalia, competent for urban innovation, historical monuments, municipal road con- struction and architectural coordination. Since May 1989, Karl Ganser has been head of the Inter- nationale Bauaustelling Emscher Park GmbH and was commissioned to prepare an international building exhibi- tion with regard to the ecological and social renovation of a former industrial area.
