THE COLOUR OF THE CITY, 1992 — The monograph “Environmental Colouring in European Cities” was presented to the Conseil Del Color of Barce- lona in February 1992. This was the result of a detailed study by the Sikkens Foundation, carried out under the leadership of the president of the Sikkens Foundation at the time, Ed Taverne. The book The Colour of the City was published on the basis of this report in 1992. Color plays an important role in our environment. It is one of the most striking and expressive elements in ur- ban planning and architecture. Through the years, the phenomenon has been examined in all sorts of different ways. These analyses have led to a more systematic ap- proach in the practice of restoration, in which physics, psychology and sociology are combined with the results of the historical study of colors. The book provides a summary of different color studies which were developed in European cities. The Colour of the City specifically deals with the color experiments in Turin, Barcelona, Mo- scow and Budapest. Back to index Download text as pdf
