GLOBAL FASHION-LOCAL TRADITION, 2005 — This publication appeared in 2005 and accompanied an international fashion exhibition in the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. The book was about the influences and effects of globalization on contemporary fashion. Various authors broadly highlighted this topic, supported appropriately by many color photographs. José Teunissen (fashion curator of the Centraal Museum) begins the book with a general introduction. Three chapters with descriptions and photographs of work by different non-western designers are about the “fashion weeks” and the internet to reach a worldwide audience. A worthwhile essay by Ted Polhemus on this topic is followed by a chapter with descriptions and photographs of top designers who base their own on local traditions. The t-shirt project of Roy Villevoye is discussed and illustrated, Sandra Niessen describes the history of the trade in dyes and the use of dyes in various cultures in detail. Back to index

With the support of the Sikkens Foundation, Sandra Niessen carried out a study into the use of color in fashion. She is an anthropologist and did her doctorate at the University of Leiden in 1985 with a thesis entitled Motifs of Life in Toba Batak Texts and Textiles. Since then she has published scores of articles about Batak textiles, as well as two books: Batak Cloth and Clothing, a Dynamic Indonesian Tradition, (1993) and Legacy in Cloth: Batak Textiles of Indonesia (2009). The last is a standard reference work on the basis of which museums and collectors can document their Batak textiles. The book Global Fashion – Local Tradition is richly illustrated, with a list of recommended literature. It is of interest for fashion students, anthropology and design, and others interested in the subject. Download text as pdf
