CITY POEMS, 1992 — The Sikkens Foundation received a partly unpublished cycle of expressionist poems about cities by Hendrik Marsman via Arthur Lehning. The board decided to pu- blish this cycle and commissioned the poets from two la- ter generations, Remco Campert and Robert Anker, to al- so write some city poems when the Sikkens Prize was awarded to Bohigas. These were published together with the poems of Marsman in a bibliophile anthology. Accor- ding to the press release: “This commission and the pu- blication were inspired by the conviction that the city and its culture are not only the field of architecture and urban planning, but certainly also that of poetry, the visual arts and cinematography.” The way in which the poet experi- ences and describes the city enriches it as a phenome- non of culture. With this anthology of city poems, the Sik- kens Foundation “wishes to give poetry a place in the public debate about the city which has also gradually started up in the Netherlands.” Back to index Download text as pdf
