1997 JOHN GAGE — On the basis of his research into and publications on the role and signifcance of color in the history of Western culture. — The 1997 Sikkens Prize was awarded to the British art historian John Gage, professor at the University of Cam- bridge. He was awarded the prize “on the basis of his re- search into and publications on the role and signifcance of color in the history of Western culture”. At the moment, the high point of his work is the monumental Colour and Culture, the first academically reliable book on color in which the many histories of the use of color, the langua- ge, philosophy, symbolism and perception of color are in- terrelated in a thorough and extremely original way.
