Sikkens Prize

1966 JAN SLOTHOUBER AND WILLIAM GRAATSMA — For the penetrating way in which they derived a link between space and color from the correspondence between the triangular planes of a cube and the six ele- mentary colors. — Jan Slothouber and William Graatsma, both exhibition ar- chitects of the information department of the State Mines, were awarded the prize “for the penetrating way in which they derived a link between space and color from the correspondence between the eight regular triangular pla- nes of the six sides of a rectangular space and the regu- lar groups of three colors, formed by the six elementary colors of those sides, and for the way in which they ap- plied this principle in their design”, to quote the concise explanation given by the Sikkens Prize commission. This color system can be seen, amongst other places, in the stands of the State Mines, which are simple and quick to construct from the prefab cube elements developed by Graatsma and Slothouber.Back to index Download text as pdf
